Understanding The Many Facets of Engineering

As a youngster journeying through school, you are presented with hundreds of potential career paths. From a very young age, you begin discussing your options for personal development and educators start accessing your aptitude for designated professions. Will you be a doctor or a lawyer or a stockbroker or a teacher of young minds? Will you express yourself artistically and become a muralist or compose a famous concerto? The path through elementary, middle and high schools weed out the lofty ambitions of those kids who hope to grow up and become the Little Mermaid or Superman, but they also help children manifest a new, more realistic vision of their future, encouraging them to follow their passions and skillsets.

During the Obama administration, a renewed emphasis was given to encourage students to pursue professions in Science, Technology, Mathematics, and Engineering, also known as STEM. According to the U.S. Department of Education, “…few American students pursue expertise in STEM fields—and we have an inadequate pipeline of teachers skilled in those subjects. That’s why [there is now] a priority of increasing the number of students and teachers who are proficient in these vital fields.”

As parents, one of the first steps in tackling our country’s deficiency in the areas of science, technology, mathematics, and engineering is to gain a further understanding of these sectors. Take for example the field of engineering; when broken down, engineering covers a wide variety of career options, but few are immediately understood and subsequently taught to school-aged children.

An engineer is someone who applies scientific knowledge to solve real-world problems, so the application of engineering is multifaceted. The field of Engineering is ever-changing, and it currently encompasses areas ranging from aerospace and agriculture to automotive and biological. There are options to pursue engineering careers in biosystems, biomedical, building, chemical, civil, communications, computer, construction and electrical, industrial, integrated, and mechanical just to name a few.

A number of engineering integrations are involved in many of the things we think of as commonplace; whether it is the genetically engineered foods we eat from the grocery store or the chemicals we use to dye our hair, an engineer played a pivotal role in the creation of those products. Therefore, it is essential not only to increase interest in the field of engineering but also to enhance the general public’s understanding of it, since many careers work in tandem with engineers.

The housing industry exemplifies many tangible engineering applications, and it is a great way to introduce the world of engineering to young people who show an interest in the areas of science, math, and problem-solving. Before the construction of a house can ever begin, there is an entire team of people needed to set the groundwork from the excavators to the utility contractors and the architects to the demolition crews, the planning is extensive. One North Georgia company understands the value of working with engineering experts, JT Magbe Contracting LLC.

They specialize in site work ranging from demolition and grading to storm-water management and utility pipe construction, such as water sewer, storm sewer and sanitary. JT Magbe is the industry-leader in clearing properties via brush mowing or forestry mulching, and they are proven experts in retention-detention pond maintenance. Moreover, they are the foremost experts in excavation and grading. The professionals at JT Magbe cross paths with engineers in nearly all of their projects, and they work hand-in-hand with them to deliver exceptional service and unparalleled results. Among their other esteemed qualities, JT Magbe possesses a deep understanding of Civil Engineering Theory which is beneficial when clients seek to utilize them for residential subdivision development, commercial retail development, or mixed-use facilities.

A patient who requires surgery for a broken bone will seek the guidance and advice of a trusted doctor, but in conjunction with the doctor, there is an unspoken team of medical professionals who stand at his side. The same is true with civil construction. The engineers, architects, and land management contractors all integrate their skills seamlessly to provide the final product. Moreover, appreciation and understanding of each pillar of the job are essential for the successful completion of the task.

It is impossible to capture the essence of an entire industry with a single example, but magnifying one, seemingly small area within the construction industry goes to show the advanced level of integration engineers have in our day-to-day lives. Think of the tremendous possibilities for expansion within the industry and the outlying sectors. By increasing our youth’s interest and knowledge of engineering careers, we can help propel our country forward for many years to come, and we can be more competitive of with the world’s other developed nations who outpace us in math, science, technology and engineering education.
