Must-have trends for summer 2012

With the recent spate of April showers, it seems summer isn’t quite here yet, but that doesn’t stop most of us from wistfully daydreaming about what we’re going to wear once the skies clear up.

In preparation for the imminent warmer temperatures – and hopefully for that much-needed beach break – it’s time to relegate your woollens and winter coats to storage and rejuvenate your spring/summer wardrobe.

This season, the 1950s Mad Men-inspired printed summer frock is still going strong. Fans of this retro, feminine look will find plenty of styles to choose from, including baby-doll dresses with subtly nipped-in waists. Team with a cardigan or shrug over the shoulders, a simple clutch bag and kitten heels for classic vintage glamour.

Alternatively, if you’d like to embrace a slightly more modern trend, you’ll be pleased to hear that the 1990s are making a comeback, and the fashion world has fallen in love with all things grunge. Channel Courtney Love circa 1992 with slouchy band t-shirts, cut-off denim shorts, crop-tops and chunky lace-up boots.

The ever-popular (if perhaps slightly impractical) white blazer is re-emerging as the must-have summer jacket, and is great for adding a touch of masculine edge to a pretty dress. Alternatively, team your blazer with Breton stripe top and pastel-coloured jeans to tick three trend boxes in one outfit.

In terms of footwear, we can expect to see plenty of 70s-inspired styles, including the humble wooden clog and the wedge espadrille. Both combine comfort with classic hippy chic, and will look fab teamed with the ubiquitous printed dress.
